SENTINEL FLAVOR TABS (Dogs 4 weeks or older)
A palatable once-a-month prescription tablet that prevents heartworm disease, several intestinal parasites, and controls flea populations. This tablet has an Insect Growth Regulator, which means it does not kill adult fleas, but rather attacks the flea population at the level at the egg and larvae. For many dogs the flea prevention provided by Sentinel will be enough to keep them comfortable unless they frequent heavily flea-populated areas. In this case additional products may be used to attack the “hitch-hiker” fleas. The beauty of using Sentinel is that you won’t have to worry about treating your house or yard for fleas—the tablet takes care of it for you! Additionally, Sentinel makes it easy for busy families to protect their dogs against five of the most common parasites. It is recommended to use Sentinel once a month, year round. Prevention is the key to effective flea control. In order to work Sentinel tablets must be given with a meal.
PARASTAR TOPICAL (Dogs 8 weeks or older)
A safe and effective topical application for the control of fleas and ticks, Parastar kills fleas within 24-48 hours of application and provides residual protection for 3-4 weeks afterwards. If used as a single-agent it may take 3-4 monthly treatments of Parastar to bring an active flea population under control. The oils in your dogs’ skin are needed for best absorption and distribution of the product; therefore, you should not bathe your dog for 48 hours before or 48 hours after application. Parastar will work to the best of it’s ability when used in combination with an effective Insect Growth Regulator (Sentinel Flavor Tabs or Knockout ES Environmental Aerosol).
CAPSTAR (Dogs and cats 4 weeks or older)
Capstar is a pill that kills the fleas you see. It is NOT a preventative. It only kills fleas currently on the pet. Capstar begins working within 30 minutes of giving the dose. You can literally see the fleas falling off of your pet! Over 90% of the fleas will be gone by 4-6 hours of administration. If your pet gets re-infested, it is safe to give another dose as often as once per day. Capstar used alone is not an effective flea prevention—it should be used in conjunction with a monthly preventative. It is advocated to be used in conjunction with Sentinel to kill off the “hitch-hiker” fleas. If Sentinel is being given monthly, the Capstar can be given once weekly until fleas are no longer observed. However, Capstar can be used in conjunction with any of the other recommended products. It should be noted that fleas must bite the dog in order to ingest the product so that it may not be the ideal treatment for dogs with a Flea Allergy.
REVOLUTION (Cats 6 weeks or older)
A safe and effective topical application for the control of fleas and other parasites (ear mites, heartworm, roundworm, and hookworm), Revolution kills adult fleas and prevents flea eggs from hatching for one month. For best results, Revolution should be applied monthly, year-round. It is an ideal product for cats because of its broad spectrum of parasite control. It should be noted that Revolution is available for use in dogs; however, we do not recommend its routine use due to the lack of intestinal parasite control in dogs.
While we are aware that flea preventive products can be a financial burden and that there are less expensive products available, we do not recommend routinely using any of the over-the-counter products. One main concern is that although many of these products may look similar to Parastar or Frontline Plus, they may chemically be very different. The market is being flooded by “New & Improved” flea products that upon closer inspection actually contain some of the older (and less safe) insecticides such as Amitraz, Organophosphates or the Pyrethrins/Pyrethroids. Many of these chemicals have been in use for over 20 years, and flea populations have developed resistance to them, rendering these products minimally effective. Because of this resistance we cannot consider these products reliable in the prevention of flea infestations. Additionally, most of these cannot be used in younger puppies or kittens, and many can be toxic to cats and small dogs. Unfortunately, we see too many cases of OTC flea product toxicity every year. Well-intentioned and uninformed owners purchase and use products in an attempt to conserve finances but end up with an unfortunate situation. Toxicity from these products affect the nervous system and can cause twitching or seizures that can lead to coma or death. Before using any products on your pet please consult a member of our health care team.
FLEA CONTROL FOR YOUR HOUSE
Our recommended product of choice is Knockout E.S. House Spray. It contains both an adulticide for fleas and ticks and an insect growth regulator to control the flea eggs and larvae. One aerosol can will treat approximately 2,000 square feet. We do not recommend using “bombs” or foggers to treat the house since these products rely on gravity and the chemicals do not reach underneath furniture into areas where fleas can “hide”.
Remember, preventing a flea infestation is not only easier than treating one, it's more cost efficient too!
